Survivor's Voice

By Pamela Asbury-Smith

I have had cancer twice, yet I am the luckiest person I know. A contradiction? Not really.

Let me digress to October 2004 when one of my sweet granddaughters came to visit, gave me her cold, and saved my life. How did that happen? The cold settled in my lungs, and in spite of two courses of powerful antibiotics, I wasn’t getting well. I feared the worst and changed to a more proactive doctor. That very day, an X-ray revealed a lung tumor. I soon had a lobectomy and was considered "cured," although a course of chemotherapy followed for "insurance."

In April 2006, as I was recuperating from the rigors of chemo, an abnormality showed on a PET scan. Tests followed with result being a double whammy, as it were: I had two types of breast cancer. I was relieved that neither chemo nor radiation has been necessary. Once again, I am considered "cured," and I do not care to tempt fate a third time.

Through both diseases, I had to completely trust the doctors and medical teams to return me to health. I found Sunstone a year prior to my first cancer diagnosis when I attended the fall Art Festival. The first visit was profound. I felt the intense healing energy that abounds there, and said I wanted to spend more time there. Be careful what you wish for! Every time I return, I breathe in the energy, and know that Sunstone provides magical healing in so many ways.

I am now part of a breast cancer support group where I now lend my support to those in need. In spite of the disease that has twice held me in its grip, my life is full of abundance in every way. I am truly the luckiest person I know.
