Sunstone Cancer Support Center is a non-profit
organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people touched by cancer.
Sunstone provides services such as movement classes and touch therapies
on a sliding scale basis. However, Sunstone can provide services at no
cost to participants if need be, but Sunstone survives
as a non-profit organization only by donations, grants, and fundraisers.
The goal of Outreach Services is to have a variety of programs available
to the survivor – and caregivers and loved ones are all welcome
to participate as well.
Check the Sunstone Calendar
for dates and times of classes, and check the Educational
Workshops page for dates and times of Ask the Doctor, Nutrition During/After
Cancer, Lymphedema, and other workshops."

Sunstone Cancer Support Groups
Why a Support Group is Important
By Margaret Hoeft
I chose to attend a support group as part of a whole armamentarium
of things I could do for myself to encourage the healing process, along
with visualization, yoga, meditation, and several other modalities. I
wanted to give my body and soul every ounce of healing available. However,
being a private person, I walked into that group with some apprehension,
nervousness, and residual anger. I walked out that evening with a feeling
of peace, and a feeling of belonging to something larger and yet more
intimate than any family or friend can provide. Although we were from
different backgrounds and histories, we were all there because of our
cancer experience. We belonged to the same sisterhood, and we understood.
In a support group, one does not have to worry about saying things that
aren’t “positive,” about questioning sacred platitudes,
about crying, and about laughing. We educate one another, we nod and murmur
“me, too,” and we validate our questions, fears, and insecurities.
I have attended support group weekly meetings continuously
for 2 1/2 years. Yes, there are sad, frightening, and difficult times
as one of us experiences a recurrence, or as one of us dies, leaving a
gaping emptiness in the place where our sister once sat. Her strength
and courage leave each of us a bit stronger and a bit wiser. And that
empty chair is filled eventually with another person who needs our support––that
is what we do, and that is who we are.
The following support groups with the sun logo, are sponsored
by the Sunstone Cancer Support Centers. Location for these support groups
are noted under each listing. For Support Group information, call the
Outreach Managing Director, Margo DeLong, MHA at (520) 694-1855.
